Lo scorso 24 marzo si è svolta, presso la base aerea di Cervia-Pisignano, una cerimonia per celebrare i cent’anni dell’83° Gruppo SAR (Search and Rescue).
L’83° Gruppo è uno dei cinque Gruppi SAR (80° / 82° / 84° / 85°) subordinati al 15° Stormo che svolgono l’attività di ricerca e soccorso in ambito nazionale. Alle dipendenze del 15° Stormo c’è anche l’81° Centro Addestramento Equipaggi (CAE), anch’esso basato a Cervia.
L’83° Gruppo è stato costituito il 5 novembre del 1925 ad Augusta (Siracusa) e inquadrato nel 27° Stormo Idrovolanti (Augusta).
La scelta di posticipare l’evento di qualche mese, sfruttando le giornate primaverili, è stata ampiamente premiata da un gradevole meteo con cielo terso e una leggera brezza proveniente dal vicinissimo Adriatico.
La giornata del 24 di marzo non è stata scelta casualmente, ma è esattamente l’ottantatreesimo giorno (83° giorno) decorso dalla data di costituzione del 5 novembre.
La cerimonia ha visto la partecipazione delle istituzioni del territorio, di un nutrito numero di personale in congedo, e da un altrettanto cospicuo numero di fotografi/appassionati e operatori media.
La celebrazione è iniziata con l’intervento del Comandante dell’83° Gruppo, il Maggiore Simone Agostinelli, che ha indirizzato il messaggio di saluto verso i rappresentanti delle istituzioni e a tutti gli intervenuti. A seguire ha preso la parola il decano dei comandanti del Gruppo, il Col. (R) Ruggero Leonetti, nel suo intervento ha posto l’accento sui trascorsi del Reparto, da tempo immemorabile impegnato a portare soccorso alla popolazione.
A seguire è intervenuto il Colonnello Antonio Viola, Comandante del 15° Stormo, che ha calorosamente ringraziato tutti gli intervenuti ed evidenziato come il Reparto si è adattato costantemente all’evoluzione degli scenari operativi, all’innovazione tecnologica dei mezzi e dell’addestramento. Altrettanto caloroso il suo ringraziamento rivolto al Comandante di Gruppo, e al suo personale per il continuo impegno profuso in questo particolare ambito.
L’ultimo intervento è stato quello del Generale di Divisione Aerea Alessandro De Lorenzo (Comandante del Comando Forze per la Mobilità e il Supporto - CFMS), da cui dipende il 15° Stormo, che ha rimarcato l’importanza del soccorso aereo, in particolare quando il nostro territorio viene pesantemente colpito da importanti fenomeni atmosferici, come per esempio l’alluvione dell’Emilia Romagna del 2023, dove lo Stormo e i suoi equipaggi hanno portato in salvo più di 300 persone in imminente pericolo di vita. |

La parte più commovente, che ha coinvolto tutti i presenti, è stata la deposizione di un colorato omaggio floreale ai piedi del monumento dei caduti dello Stormo, il ricordo è subito andato all’incidente del 23 ottobre del 2008, quando un elicottero HH-3F decollato da Rimini (fino al 2010 sede dell’83° Gruppo) e diretto a Florennes (Belgio), è precipitato nei pressi di Strasburgo (Francia) causando la morte degli otto membri dell’equipaggio.
A margine della deposizione dell’omaggio floreale il Cappellano Militare ha tenuto un lungo discorso sulla qualità delle azioni che determinano la vita di ogni persona. |
Terminata la parte commemorativa gli ospiti sono stati invitati a raggiungere di nuovo l’hangar per la presentazione di un elicottero HH-139B con una colorazione commemorativa appositamente creata per celebrare i cent’anni del Reparto.
L’esemplare codificato 15-63 MM82007 è stato parzialmente “wrappato” (wrapping – tecnica che consente di rivestire il mezzo con una pellicola adesiva termoformabile) con una colorazione che riprende i colori per antonomasia del soccorso aereo, il bianco, il giallo e le “day glow” arancioni, colorazione utilizzata nei primi anni di servizio sugli HH-3F, verniciatura poi trasformata nella mimetica standard NATO grigio/verde, più consona per le operazioni prettamente militari, per poi arrivare a quella attuale mono grigia.
Su entrambi i lati della deriva è stato posto il logo del Centenario, su ambedue i lati della trave di coda la scritta 83° SAR 1925 - 2025, sul lato sinistro sono stati collocati gli stemmi delle due Squadriglie dell’83° Gruppo, la 141ª e la 147ª, mentre sul lato destro è stato invece raffigurato un grande Pellicano. L’uccello acquatico esprime un antico simbolo cristiano di soccorso, amore estremo e sacrificio, rappresentante Cristo che dona la vita per l'umanità, basato sulla leggenda che la madre nutra i piccoli col proprio sangue, simboleggia l'Eucaristia (corpo e sangue donati) e la resurrezione.
Sui portelloni dell’elicottero era ben visibile la scritta Leonardo, come società produttrice dell’elicottero, nonché partner economico che ha contribuito alla sua realizzazione. |

La giornata è proseguita con un sorvolo della base aerea di due elicotteri HH- 139B che esibivano la bandiera italiana e quella dell’83° Gruppo, entrambe appese al cavo d’acciaio del verricello e sostenute da un aerosoccorritore.
Lo stesso special color ha poi effettuato una dimostrazione di ricerca e soccorso su terra con relativo recupero di un infortunato con barella e portato a bordo tramite il verricello.
La giornata si è conclusa con la possibilità di acquistare la patch e la litografia commemorativa, mentre per il personale in servizio, o in congedo, è stato distribuito uno zainetto dedicato. La cerimonia si è conclusa con il “tradizionale taglio” della torta da parte del Comandante di Gruppo. |

On March 24, a ceremony was held at the Cervia-Pisignano Air Base to mark the centenary of the 83° Gruppo SAR (Search and Rescue – 83rd Squadron SAR).
The 83° Gruppo is one of five Gruppi SAR (80° / 82° / 84° / 85°) under the 15° Stormo (15th Wing), which carry out search and rescue operations nationwide. Also under the 15° Stormo is the 81° Gruppo Addestramento Equipaggi (CAE - 81st Crew Training Centre), which is also based in Cervia.
The 83° Gruppo was formed on November 5, 1925 in Augusta (Syracuse) and incorporated into the 27° Stormo Idrovolanti - 27th Seaplane Wing (Augusta).
The decision to postpone the event by a few months, taking advantage of the spring weather, was amply rewarded by pleasant conditions with clear skies and a light breeze from the nearby Adriatic.
The date of March 24 was not chosen at random, but marks exactly the eighty-third day (83rd day) since the unit’s formation on November 5.
The ceremony was attended by local institutions, a large number of retired personnel, and an equally substantial number of photographers, enthusiasts and media representatives.
The celebration began with a speech by the Commander of the 83° Gruppo, Major Simone Agostinelli, who addressed a message of greeting to the representatives of the institutions and to all those present. He was followed by the Gruppo’s senior commander, Colonel (Ret.) Ruggero Leonetti, who in his speech highlighted the Unit’s history, having been committed to providing assistance to the population since time immemorial.
Colonel Antonio Viola, Commander of the 15° Stormo, then took the floor. He warmly thanked all those present and highlighted how the Stormo has constantly adapted to evolving operational scenarios and to technological innovations in equipment and training. He extended equally warm thanks to the Gruppo Commander and his staff for their ongoing commitment in this particular area.
The final speaker was Air Division General Alessandro De Lorenzo (Commander of the Comando Forze per la Mobilità e il Supporto - Mobility and Support Forces Command), to which the 15° Stormo reports, who emphasised the importance of air rescue, particularly when our territory is severely affected by major weather events, such as the 2023 Emilia Romagna floods, where the Stormo and its crews rescued more than 300 people in imminent danger of losing their lives.
The most moving part, which touched everyone present, was the laying of a colourful floral tribute at the foot of the Stormo’s war memorial, which immediately brought to mind the accident of October 23, 2008, when an HH-3F helicopter, having taken off from Rimini (home to the 83° Gruppo until 2010) and bound for Florennes (Belgium), crashed near Strasbourg (France), causing the deaths of all eight crew members.
Following the laying of the floral tribute, the Military Chaplain gave a lengthy speech on the nature of the actions that shape every person’s life.
Once the commemorative ceremony had concluded, the guests were invited back to the hangar for the unveiling of an HH-139B helicopter featuring a commemorative livery specially created to mark the unit’s centenary.
The aircraft with registration number 15-63 MM82007 has been partially “wrapped” (a technique involving the application of a thermoformable adhesive film) in a colour scheme that incorporates the quintessential colours of air rescue: white, yellow and “day glow” orange – a colour scheme used in the early years of service on the HH-3F, a livery later changed to the standard NATO grey/green camouflage, more suited to purely military operations, before evolving into the current all-grey scheme.
The Centenary logo has been placed on both sides of the tail rotor; the inscription “83° SAR 1925–2025” appears on both sides of the tail boom; on the left side are the insignia of the two Squadriglie (Flights) of the 83° Gruppo, the 141ª and the 147ª; whilst on the right side a large pelican is depicted.
The waterbird is an ancient Christian symbol of salvation, selfless love and sacrifice, representing Christ giving his life for humanity. Based on the legend that the mother feeds her young with her own blood, it symbolises the Eucharist (the body and blood given) and the Resurrection.
The word “Leonardo” was clearly visible on the helicopter’s doors, as the manufacturer of the helicopter and the financial partner that contributed to its execution.
The day continued with a flypast over the airbase by two HH-139B helicopters displaying the Italian flag and that of the 83° Gruppo, both suspended from the winch’s steel cable and held by a rescue worker.
The same specially coloured helicopter then carried out a ground search and rescue demonstration, involving the recovery of an injured person on a stretcher and hoisting them on board via the winch.
The day concluded with the opportunity to purchase the commemorative patch and lithograph, whilst a special rucksack was distributed to both serving and retired personnel. The ceremony concluded with the Gruppo Commander performing the “traditional cutting” of the cake.
