L’aeroporto di Lajes si trova sull’isola di Terceira, una delle nove isole che formano l’Arcipelago delle Azzorre, unica Base Militare delle Isole è occupata in parte da forze militari del Portogallo, Nazione di cui fanno parte le Azzorre, e in parte da quelle degli Stati Uniti d’America.
Lajes è una Base Militare di importanza strategica, trovandosi quasi a metà strada tra l’Europa continentale e il continente americano, come è facile intuire viene molto utilizzata per effettuare le soste tecniche a tutti i velivoli miliari che devono effettuare la trasvolata dell’Oceano Atlantico, essi per ragioni di autonomia sono vincolati nel fare o continui rifornimenti in volo oppure atterrare su di essa per effettuare il rifornimento. Quindi è molto frequente poter osservare aerei di molte forze aeree atterrare, rifornirsi e ripartire verso l’altro continente, una parte dei velivoli cargo svolgono missioni su Lajes per portare materiali, mezzi e personale usati per il funzionamento della struttura.
Come abbiamo potuto osservare e documentare durante la nostra presenza sull’isola i velivoli della Royal Air Force hanno fatto scalo tecnico durante il ritorno dagli States dove hanno partecipato all’esercitazione Red Flag 2008. |

Lajes airport is located on the island of Terceira, one of nine islands that forms the Azores archipelago. It is the only Military Base on islands and is home of Portugal military forces, owner Nation of these territories, and it hosts also United States airmen.
Lajes Air Force Base is well known for his strategic importance, being almost halfway between European continent and the American continent: this is easy to perceive because is largely used in order to carry out technical support to all military aircraft overtaking the Atlantic Ocean. The reason is in their limited autonomy: in some occasions, is better avoid continuos refuelling in flight and land on it for a standard refuel. Due to this, often it’s possible to observe many Aircrafts of various Air Forces land here and depart for the their continent of destination; furthermore, there is a massive activity of cargo aircraft carrying out missions on Lajes to bring materials, resources and personnel to operate the facility.
As we have observed and documented during our presence on the island, some Aircraft of the Royal Air Force stopped over in their return from the States where they participated at the Red Flag 2008 exercise.
