Comando Aeroporto Cameri
Il Comando Aeroporto assicura, con le modalità stabilite dal Comando Logistico il coordinamento ed il controllo dell'attività di volo svolta sull'Aeroporto, inoltre fornisce supporto logistico ed amministrativo al Comando di Corpo Autonomo del 1° RMV (Reparto Manutenzione Velivoli) reparto che garantisce la manutenzione di 1°, 2° e 3° Livello Tecnico alla flotta dei Tornado e dei nuovissimi Typhoon dell’Aeronautica Militare.
Un'altra funzione che contraddistingue il Comando Aeroporto è quella di fornire il supporto logistico/amministrativo alla Circoscrizione degli Enti aeronautici del Piemonte, Valle d'Aosta e Provincia di Varese.
Fino ad agosto del 1999 Cameri è stata una base pienamente operativa con la presenza di un gruppo di volo denominato 21° Gruppo CI (Caccia Intercettori) facente parte del 53° Stormo "Guglielmo Chiarini", Gruppo equipaggiato prima con i velivoli Starfighter poi con i velivoli Tornado ADV, essi hanno solcato i cieli della campagna Novarese per decenni. successivamente al trasferimento del 21° Gruppo Caccia presso il 36° Stormo di Gioia del Colle, il 53° Stormo viene messo in “Posizione Quadro” e la Base Aerea viene ristrutturata in Comando Aeroporto, nel quale continuano ad operare il Gruppo Servizi Tecnici Operativi (In passato 453°Gruppo STO) sia il Gruppo Servizi Logistici Operativi (in passato 553°Gruppo SLO).

Il 155°Gruppo ETS "Pantere Nere"
Il 155° Gruppo dipende dal 50° Stormo, il suo ruolo primario è quello di trovare e distruggere le installazioni Radar nemiche, installazioni Radar che servono ad intercettare eventuali aeromobili con la conseguente attivazione delle difese missilistiche per abbattere gli stessi, compito non sempre reso facile dalla continua evoluzione tecnologica di questi sistemi. Il 155° Gruppo è l'unico reparto dell'Aeronautica Militare a svolgere questo compito denominato SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defence), il reparto si avvale dell'utilizzo del Tornado ECR (Eletronic Combat Reconnaissance), sviluppato sulla base del caccia bombardiere IDS, è stato opportunamente modificato con la rimozione del cannone e l'installazione di un sistema dedicato e di missili AGM 88B Harm, un'ulteriore integrazione al sistema è l'utilizzo degli NVG (Night Vision Goggles).

The 155° Gruppo ETS (Eletronic Warfare Tactical Suppression) "Pantere Nere" of the 50° Stormo, based at Piacenza San Damiano, was, from 12 September, deployed to Cameri airfield (Novara). The Pantere, commanded by Ten.Col. Dario D'Ippolito, were stationed at the Aeroporto di Cameri until the end of November, allowing the completion of resurfacing operations on the runway at their home base at Piacenza.
The period required to transfer the personnel and aircraft of the 155° Gruppo was around one week, and was concluded with the return of the unit’s last aircraft directo from the Spangdahlem USAF base (Germany), where they had been participants in a multi-national exercise.
The Gruppo di Volo deployed to Cameri with seven aircraft, four Tornado ECR and three Tornado IDS: the flying and operational support personnel required to support the detachment, however, amounted to around fifty people. The staff posted in from Piacenza were not solely occupied with the flying operations, but also reinforced the normal staffing of the Base Aerea, acting in synergy with their colleagues from Cameri. During the permanence at Cameri the planned flying activity was two missions per day, one in the late morning and the other in the early afternoon. The missions had a semi-standard duration of around one and a quarter hours, and were also flown by a pair of aircraft. This activity would permit the 155°Gruppo and its flying and ground personnel to maintain full operational readiness even while deployed away from their home base.
On 18 September, during a press conference organised by the Comando Aeroporto di Cameri, the Comandante of the Aeroporto di Cameri, Col. Gian Mario Morresi, and the Capo Ufficio Comando, Cap.Marco Ciolli, gathered together the local media and the civil authorities from nearby Cameri and Bellinzago Novarese to illustrate the range of training activites that would take place at Cameri airfield over the coming months: this conference also attracted the specialist press, and the principal press agencies from the Provincia di Novara. The journalists were taken to the Comando di Aeroporto, where, with the assistance of the Comandante of the 155°Gruppo, a precise explanation of the flying activities and aircraft type to be utilised was provided, giving an in-depth analysis of the Tornado aircraft and the entire weapons system that equips the fighter bomber.
Comando Aeroporto Cameri
The Comando Aeroporto assures, under the modalities established by the Comando Logistico, the coordination and control of flying activities conducted from the airfield, and additionally provides logistic and administrative support to the Comando di Corpo Autonomo of the 1° RMV (Reparto Manutenzione Velivoli – Aircraft Maintenance Unit), which performs first, second and third level engineering operations on the Tornado and brand new Typhoon fleets of the Aeronautica Militare.
Another function assigned to the Comando Aeroporto is the provision of logistical and administrative support to the military aviation agencies in Piemonte, Valle d'Aosta and the Provincia of Varese.
Until August 1999 Cameri was a fully operational base housing a Gruppo di Volo, the 21° Gruppo CI (Caccia Intercettori – interceptor fighter), part of the 53° Stormo "Guglielmo Chiarini". This Gruppo was initially equipped with the Starfighter aircraft, later converting to the Tornado ADV: with these aircraft, the unit became a familiar sight over Novara and its surroundings for decades. Sunsequently, the 21° Gruppo Caccia was transferred to the 36° Stormo at Gioia del Colle and the 53° Stormo was placed into “Posizione Quadro” (stood down), and the operational Base Aerea was restructured as a Comando Aeroporto, under which continued to operate the Gruppo Servizi Tecnici Operativi (formerly the 453°Gruppo S.T.O.) and the Gruppo Servizi Logistici Operativi (formerly the 553°Gruppo SLO), providing technical and logistical support.
155°Gruppo ETS "Pantere Nere"
The 155° Gruppo ETS (Eletronic Warfare Tactical Suppression) – the Pantere Nere (black panthers) – is parented by the 50°Stormo. Its primary role is that of locating and destroying hostile radar installations which serve to identify and target aircraft for the enemy missile defences to destroy. This role is not always simple due ot the continual evolution of the technology used by these systems. The 155° Gruppo is the only unit of the dell'Aeronautica Militare that undertakes this speciality, designated SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defence), making use of the Tornado ECR (Eletronic Combat Reconnaissance), a version developed from the basic IDS fighter bomber. This base version was modified by the removal of the cannon and the installation of dedicated electronics and integration of the AGM 88B Harm missile: the aircraft is further optimised for the use of NVG (Night Vision Goggles).
The programme laid on for the press visit to Cameri, following the traditional welcoming rituals, continued with the attendance of the delegates at the aircrew pre-flight briefing followed by an explanation of the mission that would take two aircraft across the Po valley as far as Portogruaro to identify an old Aeronautica Militare radar site, and then return to base. Following the take off of the two fighter bombers, the Comandante of the 155° Gruppo illustrated the activities and aims of the unit. On the return of the aircraft, one of the two Tornado simulated an emergency landing, followed by the intervention of the base resuce teams, who extracted the aircrew from the cockpit and provided initial first aid.
