Devo ammettere che per me e Stenio una visita all'aviazione militare dell'Azerbaijan è stato sempre un sogno proibito. Le poche foto pubblicate mostravano una coccarda ad alta visibilità che risaltava in modo spettacolare sulle fusoliere di velivoli di costruzione sovietica. Tentammo molte vie: l'Ambasciata azera a Roma, la nostra a Baku, perfino una lettera al Presidente. Riuscimmo ad instaurare un dialogo con l'addetto militare azero presso la NATO a Bruxelles, solo per sentirci dire che era severamente proibito visitare basi aeree nel paese asiatico. Ma non perdemmo la speranza e l'occasione ci si presentò inaspettata nel marzo 2015. La base aerea dell'Aeronautica turca 3 AIEU di Konya avrebbe ospitato alcuni velivoli azeri impegnati nell'esercitazione con le Forze Armate della Turchia “TurAz Falcon 2015”, mentre alcuni elicotteri avrebbero partecipato nel medesimo tempo all’esercitazione ”ISIK 2015”.
Grazie alla nostra Ambasciata ad Ankara potemmo recarci così in Anatolia dove assistemmo alla esercitazione che prevedeva tiri al poligono della “Salt Area”, intercettazioni con combattimenti aerei simulati ed operazioni di soccorso nelle quali le Forze Aeree turche ed azere fecero del loro meglio come da copione.
Ma soprattutto ci fu permesso, ma solo alla fine dell'attività di volo, di accedere al piazzale dove erano presenti tre Sukhoi 25K ed UB del Filo 411.3, Mig 29 di tre versioni diverse ( 9-12,9-13 e biposto UB) del Filo 408 nonché quattro elicotteri Mil Mi 17 del Filo 843 tutti dell'Aeronautica dell'Azerbajan. Questi velivoli erano supportati dal solito Ilyushin 76TD del reparto da trasporto (4K-78131) unico velivolo di quel tipo in dotazione.
Per la cronaca i partecipanti all’esercitazione per la THK erano il 111Filo su F 4E, il 132Filo su F 16C/D e per l'ala rotante il 135Filo su AS532.
E' utile ricordare che Turchia ed Azerbaijan per decenni sono state su schieramenti opposti, nella NATO la Turchia e nel Patto di Varsavia, in quanto Repubblica Socialista sovietica l'Azerbaijan; ora le comuni radici culturali hanno ravvicinato i due paesi che oltretutto parlano lingue molto simili.
Ci fu permesso di scambiare strette di mano con piloti e tecnici azeri ed ovviamente di scattare le tanto attese foto. In sintesi fu un’esperienza indimenticabile. |

I must admit that for me and Stenio a visit to the Azerbaijani Air Force was always a forbidden dream. The few photos published showed a high visibility insignia that stood out spectacularly on the fuselages of Soviet-built aircraft. We tried many ways: the Azerbaijani Embassy in Rome, ours in Baku, even a letter to the President. We managed to establish a dialogue with the Azerbaijani military attaché to NATO in Brussels, only to hear that it was strictly forbidden to visit air bases in the Asian country. But we did not lose hope and the opportunity appeared unexpected in March 2015. The Turkish Air Force Base 3 AIEU in Konya would host some Azerbaijani aircraft engaged in the exercise with the Turkish Armed Forces "TurAz Falcon 2015", while some helicopters would participate in the same time exercise "ISIK 2015".
Thanks to our embassy in Ankara we were able to go to Anatolia where we attended the exercise that included shooting at the shooting range of the "Salt Area", interceptions with simulated air combat and rescue operations in which the Turkish and Azerbaijani Air Forces did their best as planned.
But above all we were allowed, but only at the end of the flight activity, to enter the apron where there were three Sukhoi 25K and UB of Filo 411.3, Mig 29 of three different versions ( 9-12,9-13 and two-seater UB) Filo 408 and four Azerbaijani Air Force Mil Mi 17 helicopters. These aircraft were supported by the usual Ilyushin 76TD of the transport unit (4K-78131) only aircraft of that type supplied.

It is useful to recall that Turkey and Azerbaijan have been on opposite sides for decades, in NATO Turkey and in the Warsaw Pact, as the Soviet Socialist Republic Azerbaijan; Now the common cultural roots have brought the two countries closer together, which also speak very similar languages.
We were allowed to swap handshakes with Azerbaijani pilots and technicians and of course to take the long-awaited photos. In short, it was an unforgettable experience.
